Frequently Asked Questions
Do you ship?
Not currently. We are looking into this option for the future. Pick up must be done in person at the meat locker, located in Central Kansas.
Is the meat frozen upon pickup from the meat locker?
Yes, the meat has already been packaged and frozen by the meat locker. As long as you can make it back home within an hour or two, you won’t need to bring coolers with you to pick up. If you are more than a couple hours away, we suggest you bring several large coolers and either ice or dry ice with you to pick up your beef.
Why grass raised and grain finished?
Our cattle are raised on natural Kansas grasses here on our farm and in their Kansas Flint hills pasture. The grass ensures the cattle get significant vitamins and minerals, that are rich in antioxidants. When they aren’t in the Flint hills pasture, they are receiving a specialized blend that includes milo, bean meal, and rolled corn. We grain finish our cattle with things like corn, silage, and prairie hay to ensure the best flavor and to produce healthy cattle to stock your freezer.
Can we pick out our own animal before processing?
You sure can! We always welcome visitors. Just get ahold of us before your appointment date and you can come visit us on the farm. We would love to show you around and you’re welcome to see the cattle before they go into the meat locker.
How much freezer space do I need?
A good rule of thumb is one cubic foot of freezer space for every 35-40 lbs of meat. So, a quarter beef would fit in about 4 cubic feet, a half beef would fit in about 8 cubic feet and a whole beef would fit in about 16 cubic feet. Those are minimum requirements. So, if you have other things in your freezer, plan on getting a bigger freezer.
What does standardized processing cover?
It covers hamburger, standard steaks, and standard roasts. It does not cover things like making your hamburger into patties, beef jerky, cutting your steaks into steak strips, or custom cuts. The extra upcharge items are the customer’s responsibility to pay to the meat locker.
What kinds of questions is the meat locker going to ask me in regards to making decisions about cuts?
The meat locker will walk you through the process and breakdown your options for you. They will ask if you want your hamburger in 1 lb or 2 lb packages. They will ask about what thickness you want your steaks cut and if you want the greatest number of steaks or if you’d like more hamburger than other cuts. They will ask if you want stew meat or ribs. Don’t forget to specify if you’d like fat trimmed or left on for steaks and also if you want a leaner hamburger or not.
What kind of meat locker do you use for processing?
We use only local, state certified or USDA certified facilities that we trust and have a good reputation.
